I spent the afternoon doing research on the desktop in our family room and didn’t come across anything new about Richter or his “mystical suit of armor,” but did find much about the Michaelses, the Suttners, and the Westings. What I discovered made me wish really hard for Emery’s “virtuous” theory. Both men were said to have been excellent fathers, husbands, sons, grandfathers, employers, and friends. They were hard workers, honorable businessmen, upright citizens, and dedicated humanitarians. I couldn’t find one black mark against either gentleman, nor could I find any against William, who continued his grandfather’s legacy of good works. I found a picture of him passing out boxed lunches for Operation Night Watch, an organization with the mission of helping Seattle’s homeless. In the picture, he shook hands with an elderly man that many would have been afraid to touch. Studying his face, I saw no squeamishness on it, only kindness and compassion.

“You’re a good person, William,” I told the picture. “I can tell.”

“Who’s he?” Chazz’s voice came from behind me.

“No one,” I answered, chiding myself for having spoken out loud. I had been so preoccupied with research that I had forgotten Chazz was curled up on the sectional, drawing in his sketchbook.

I maneuvered the arrow to the top left corner of the screen, but wasn’t quick enough to close the page before my little brother popped up at my side.

He squinted at the homeless man. “That guy’s got no teeth. Why doesn’t he got teeth?”

“He forgot to brush,” I teased.

Chazz’s eyes rounded. “Be right back,” he said, and dashed out of the room.

“You are so mean, Cassidy,” I scolded myself, grinning, and looked back at William. The front door opened, and I caught a whiff of Nate.

“Where’s the fire?” he asked Chazz, who was stumbling up the stairs.

I clicked the mouse, and William vanished.

“Gotta brush my teeth,” Chazz called to him, and his little feet pattered down the upstairs hall. Giggling at his cuteness, I got up from the computer and flopped down on the sectional.

“And here I’ve been worried sick about you all day,” Nate said, entering the room.

Flipping over, I grinned and whispered, “Don’t tell anyone, but I played hooky today.”

“You and Em both.” Nate plunked down next to me. “He must’ve caught what you have,” he added devilishly. “Huh. Wonder how that happened?”

I snapped up Chazz’s sketchbook and whacked him with it. “You are so obnoxious!” I whacked him again. “Why does everyone have to give us such a bad time?” Laughing, Nate blocked my assault as I brought down the sketchbook repeatedly, proclaiming, “Emery and I are just friends! Friends, friends, friends, friends, friends!”

Getting hold of the sketchbook, Nate hugged it to his stomach. “I’d be a little more convinced if you guys weren’t all lovey-dovey all the time.”

I stared at him, stunned. “We are not.”

“You’re like magnets.” Nate tossed the sketchbook onto the ottoman. “Or you’re the magnet, and he’s getting pulled into your force field. The dude is schmuck-mitten over you.”

“It’s not like that.
